Global Economic Update

  • In the UK, the construction PMI dropped more-than-expected to 50.20 in January, compared to a level of 52.20 in December.
  • In the Eurozone, the producer price index (PPI) rose less-than-anticipated 2.20% on a YoY basis in December, compared to a rise of 2.80% in the last month.
  • In the US, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at a level of 4.10% in January. Non-farm payrolls surged more-than-expected 200.00 K in January, compared to a revised gain of 160.00 K in December. The average hourly earnings of all employees rose higher-than-expected 2.90% on a YoY basis in January, compared to an increase of 2.70% in December. The private payrolls advanced 196.00 K in January, compared to an increase of 166.00 K in December. The final Reuters/Michigan consumer sentiment index dropped to 95.70 in January, compared to a reading of 95.90 in the previous month. The final durable goods orders surged 2.80% on a MoM basis in December, compared to a rise of 1.70% in the prior month. Factory orders climbed more-than-expected 1.70% on a MoM basis in December, compared to a similar rise in November.
  • In Japan, the composite PMI surged to 52.80 in January, compared to a level of 52.20 in the previous month. The Nikkei services PMI jumped to 51.90 in January, compared to a level of 51.10 in the last month.
  • In China, the Caixin/Markit composite PMI advanced to 53.70 in January, compared to a reading of 53.00 in December. The services PMI index increased unexpectedly to a level of 54.70 in January, compared to a level of 53.90 in the prior month.
  • In Australia, the AIG performance of services index surged to a level of 54.90 in January, compared to a level of 52.00 in December.
