Global Economic Update

  • In the UK, retail sales rose less-than-expected 1.60% on a YoY basis in January, compared to a rise of 1.50% in the prior month. The Rightmove house price index increased 1.50% on a YoY basis in February, compared to a climb of 1.10% in the last month. Retail sales ex-fuel surged less-than-expected 0.10% on a MoM basis in January, compared to a fall of 1.50% in the previous month. Retail sales advanced less-than-anticipated 0.10% on a MoM basis in January, compared to a drop of 1.40% in December. The Rightmove house price index jumped 0.80% on a MoM basis in February, compared to an advance of 0.70% in the prior month.
  • In Germany, the wholesale price index rose 2.00% on a YoY basis in January, compared to a rise of 1.80% in the last month. The wholesale price index increased 0.90% on a MoM basis in January, compared to a fall of 0.30% in previous month.
  • In the US, the flash Michigan consumer sentiment index surprisingly surged to 99.90 in February, compared to a reading of 95.70 in January. Housing starts climbed higher-than-expected 9.70% to an annual rate of 1326.00 K on MoM basis in January, compared to a revised level of 1209.00 K in the prior month. Building permits rose more-than-expected 7.40% to an annual rate of 1396.00K on MoM basis in January, compared to a reading of 1300.00 K in the last month. The import price index surged higher-than-anticipated 1.00% on a MoM basis in January, compared to a revised rise of 0.20% in the prior month. The export price index climbed more-than-expected 0.80% on a MoM basis in January, compared to an advance of 0.10% in the last month.
  • In Japan, the adjusted merchandise trade surplus expanded higher-than-expected to Yen 373.30 billion in January, compared to level of Yen 90.70 billion in the previous month.
